ONESHOT 04 : Together Forever

Youngbae danced to the beat of the song. Beads of perspiration formed as he tried to concentrate on the dance steps. His thoughts were fleeting across the room along with the beat of the music. It was unusual because usually as soon he started dancing, his body will move along with the passion of the melody, body rule over his mind. But today he was distracted by Lee Joon who was dancing beside him in the studio along with other dancers.

Youngbae eyed him as he danced smoothly and glanced at Joan who was sitting among a group of by watchers. She seemed far away and she was biting her thumb, a common habit when she is thinking hard.

“Yah” Joon hissed as Youngbae almost knocked into him. Youngbae nodded, mumbling a low audible apology.

Joan watched silently at her boyfriend, Youngbae, noticing that he wasn’t in his best performance today. He had been acting weird since the day her ex-boyfriend, Lee Joon, transferred back to their school. But who’s to say who’s acting weird when she herself felt weird and confused.

She and Joon had been dating for two years when one day she found out that he was cheating on her with a noona. She felt betrayed and completely broken to the point that breathing was so difficult that it hurts everytime she inhale. Lee Joon moved to Japan after a week of the incident. Not seeing Joon was more difficult than seeing him although the betrayal.

It was until she met Youngbae. The sweet and caring Youngbae nursed her broken heart and nurtured her soul to trust another. Their feelings towards each other grew and they became lovers but fate must be giving them obstacles since Joon has returned.

Joan touched her lips, remembering the day Joon came back into her school. She felt guilty towards Youngbae but it came out of the blue, Joon appearing from her back as she was playing the piano in the music room and kissed her when she turned around, thinking that it was Youngbae. But she felt more ashamed that a kiss from the past made her heart wavered despite what Joon had done to her.

Youngbae looked at her sweetheart’s troubled face and her finger on her lips. He knew that she was thinking about the kiss that day. The day that made him feel heartache for the first time since the day he saw Joan’s sad lifeless face. He accidently witnessed a scene of his girlfriend and her ex was kissing. Although he felt enraged but he stayed behind the curtains, his feelings all bottled up and he walked away. But he left too soon that he didn’t witnessed the shocked face on Joan’s face and Joon’s red cheeks.

“Gwaenchanayo? You seem perplexed” Youngbae wrapped an arm around Joan’s waist and kissed her forehead. “Yeh.” Joan nuzzled against Youngbae’s shoulder.

“Let’s go for the usuals?” they walked toward the door together. Joan didn’t answer Youngbae’s question because she saw Joon standing beside the door, his eyes bore into hers. This, of course witnessed by Youngbae but he pretended he didn’t as kept his wrecked heart in silence.

Joan pulled Younbae towards the door, doing her best to ignore Lee Joon but a lady in a stylish suit approached them, her heels click-clacking.

“Dong Youngbae?”

“Yeh. And you are?”

“Pardon me for the rude approach. Let me introduce myself. I’m Hwang Jihyeon, a representative from YG Entertainment. I’m sure you have heard of this name. May I have a few private words with you?”

Youngbae looked at the lady in front of him, Joan and Joon. He nodded but felt uneasiness in the pit of his stomach for leaving Joan near Joon.

Joan was about to leave the place herself after Youngbae followed the odd lady when Joon grabbed her wrist and pulled her to somewhere else.

“Joan, I’m sorry for what I’ve done in the past but I still love you” Joon started, sincerity in his eyes.

“Sorry can’t erase what already happened. Sorry can’t make all the bad things disappear. Sorry can’t return my trust to you. Also I’m with Youngbae now and I lo-love him.”

“Really? But why do you seem hesitant to say that you love him? I know I was wrong but I wanted to prove to you that I’m really sincere” Joon persuaded her.

“Please don’t do this to me. You’ve hurt me really bad” Joan walked away, swallowing the hurt that surfaced.

“I’ll wait for you!” he whispered and stared at Joan’s disappearing figure with a pang of regret.

Mixed thoughts ran through Joan’s head. ‘Why did I hesitate? Who do I really love?’ she thought and ran into Youngbae.

“Whoops, careful dear. I’ve been looking for you” Youngbae smiled and his eyes disappearing into a line, a trait that Joan always love about Youngbae. His smile always cheered her up like a sun on a cloudy day but it seemed today his eyes weren’t smiling like his lips.

“What wrong baby? What did the lady said?” Joan looked up to him as they walked towards the door.

“Guess what? I’m a YG trainee from now on!” Youngbae said excitedly, making Joan jump up and down with him.

“What?! Really? Congratulation!” she hugged him and gave him the sweetest smile. “Come on, let’s celebrate. Foods on me” Joan winked and walked ahead of Youngbae.

“Yeh..” Youngbae smiled weakly as he stared at Joan from behind and quickly followed her.

“Gahh!! What is wrong with me?!” Joan yelled out in frustration as she kicked the sand. She was sitting on one of the swings in the playground near her house. 

She hadn’t seen Youngbae much lately due to his busy life of being a YG trainee except in school but Joan wasn’t gonna complain about that. She supported him with all her heart. But in Youngbae’s absence, Lee Joon kept on pestering her; trying to spark up old flame.

She stood up and walked home. Her foot caught onto the cracks of the pavement and she fell on her knees. Her leggings were torn and her knees was scratched a little, blood oozing out. Suddenly it was déjà vu.

 She got to know Youngbae this way. Joan was clearing her thoughts in the playground after Lee Joon moved and when on the way home, she fell. She found herself holding onto an outstretched hand and looking into a pair of caring eyes. Youngbae took out a bandana and wrapped her cut after he cleaned it, doing it careful so that Joan wouldn’t wince in pain.

Joan snapped back into reality and looked at her knee. ‘Well, he’s not here’ she sighed and looked through her bag. She found a bandana, the same one that Youngbae used before. She smiled and wrapped it around her wound.

Bark! Bark! Bark!

A fierce looking dog barked at Joan. She was about to get up and run for her life before remembering that she faced this dog before.

“Here doggie doggie~ I’m not gonna hurt you” Joan reached out her hands towards the golden retriever. The dog stopped barking and sniffed her fingers, after a few moments of recognition; he started licking Joan’s fingers and wagged his tail happily.

“See?” Joan patted its head, his doggy eyes looking at Joan as if asking her where the guy with Joan before was.

After playing with the dog for a while, Joan continued her walk back home. With every step, the wind grew wild and the sky became darker. She pulled the oversized jacket tighter around her to keep warm; a whiff of Youngbae’s scent caught her nose.

As soon as she got home she went straight up to her room, not noticing her mom’s call. Her mom shook her head worriedly. She hung the jacket behind her door and lie down on her bed. As she stared around her room, every bit in the corner of her room has something that reminds her about Youngbae. She realised even though he’s not with her right now, her head is filled with him and even the slightest memory together with him still made her giddy. She tried remembering what she used to be with Lee Joon before but nothing came up.

Suddenly there was a knock on her door and her mom’s head appeared.

“You ok sweetie?” her mom entered and sat at the edge of her bed. Joan nodded and snuggled against her mom like a little child. Breathing in the motherly scent, Joan started to pour out her problems.

“You’ll figure out soon” Joan’s mom cooed. “What if I make the wrong choice?” Joan sniffed. “I know you’ll do the right thing. Don’t worry too much and just listen to your heart’s voice” she kissed Joan’s forehead and left her alone to think.

Youngbae stared at the plane ticket in his hands. What am I going to do with this?

“Yah~ chingu, Japan would be da bomb!” Jiyong pumped his fist in excitement. Youngbae looked at his friend and forced a smile.

“You ok?” Jiyong calmed down noticing that Youngbae was not as excited as him. Youngbae shrugged and continue staring into space.

“She’ll understand”

“Perhaps we’re not meant to be together forever” Youngbae sighed.

“Forever is a long time bae. And to be together forever you two must work it out”

“Maybe I should let her go. After all she still likes him” he stood up and walked away. Jiyong looked at his friend, “you shouldn’t give up on love easily” he called after him.

 “Joan! There’s something in the mail for you!” Joan’s mom yelled downstairs as Joan was preparing to look for Youngbae. She ran downstairs to see a parcel was sitting on her living room coffee table. She tore the wrapping off revealing a teddy bear. Joan remembered that she and Youngbae ordered it for their anniversary together. It was a couple teddies but the ‘guy’ teddy was to be delivered to her while the ‘girl’ to Youngbae. Joan turned the teddy around to read the word ‘Love’ sewn onto its tummy and placed it inside her bag.

Joan arrived at the park to see Youngbae playing with the golden retriever. The dog bark at her and wagged his tail before running off elsewhere.

“Hey jagiya” Youngbae greeted her with a smile, his eyes crunching into a thin line. “There’s something I wanna tell you” he took Joan’s hand in his as they sat on the bottom of the slide. For some reason Joan has a bad feeling about Youngbae’s done.

“I’m going to Japan for training” Youngbae told her. Joan was stunned as she did not expect this at all and wasn’t sure how to react.

“Before you say anything let me finish what I have to say” Youngbae continued “I knew what was going on between you and Joon. I saw the two of you in *cough* the piano that day” he confessed.

Joan eyes went wide and she opened her mouth to explain it but she was cut off by Youngbae.

“I heard what he said that day too” he let out his feelings.

Oh gawd, is this the real reason why he’s going to Japan? I know that I’ve been a bad girlfriend to him lately but why? Joan thought as tears started to sting at the corners of her eyes.

“I know that you still have feelings for him and I respect it if you wanted to return to him” Youngbae stood up and played with the pebbles, his back to her

No, that’s not true. I was confused at first but I realised that I only love you. Joan wanted to say but the words stuck at her throat.

“And I thought that I should let you go before I go to Japan” Joan couldn’t believe her ears and thought if there’s any way to stop Youngbae to say the words she knew he’s going to say next.

“But...” Joan lifted up her head to look at Youngbae turning to her “I’ve decided to fight for your love   and won’t give you up just like that” he said with a glint of determination in his eyes.

Joan was shocked and confused at the outcome of events that she barely could comprehend what was going on. Youngbae neared her and touched her hands gently with his; staring into her soul.

“So please wait until I return”

Lost for words, Joan did what she could to reply. She closed her eyes and kissed him. Youngbae was stunned at first but he returned the kiss and put his right hand on Joan’s neck to deepen the kiss. When they broke the kiss, Youngbae rubbed his neck shyly and Joan stared the ground, embarrassed to look at him.

Youngbae sat down next to her and took out something from the paper bag beside it. It was a teddy bear similar to Joan but it’s the ‘girl’ bear.

“Ahhh.. *clears throat* this arrive in the mail today. Did yours?” Youngbae said courteously. Joan dug into her bag and showed him the teddy with a bright smile plastered on her face, her cheeks still as red as an apple.

They placed the bears together and it read ‘Forever’ and ‘Together’. Joan placed her head on Youngbae’s shoulder as invisible strings pulled their lips into a grin. The words brought so much meaning to them.

“Together Forever” Youngbae murmured as he kissed Joan on the lips softly.
